The world famous Snake Boat Race (‘Vallamkali’ in malayalam) is the most defining moment during Onam season. This event was so popular that first PM Jawaharlal Nehru instituted a running trophy for the Snake Boat Race winners.
Vallamkali boats, also known locally as ‘Chundan Vallams‘ measure about 100 feet long and has a seating capacity of 150 men. The boats are usually made of the wood from anjili tree, though sometimes teak is also used. The ends of the boats are curved in shape to look like a cobra hood – this is how their name came about.
The event is a major tourist attraction for Kerala with millions of visitors turning up to celebrate this race and other events in the Onam season. This season let Tapovan be your base to visit all the surrounding festivities and fun.
